How do I publish a page on confluence overwriting other peoples edits in the process?

Rosie Gee November 7, 2018

I am trying to publish changes to a page but can't because other users have made changes they have not published before me, one of the users is no longer with the company so cannot be prompted to publish changes or assist is there a way I can overwrite their changes?

I'm the administrator for Jira and Confluence so I feel like there must be something I can do?

Hello Rosie and welcome to the Community!

Dealing with left over drafts that are preventing you from saving work can be frustrating.  We need a bit more detail so we can get your proper instructions.

Are you on Confluence cloud or server?

When you go to save your page, are you displayed with an error message or prompt?

I want to ensure we provide instructions on how to resolve this but want to avoid having you try something that may not match your issue. Once we have your answers we should be able to get you instructions on how to remove those unpublished drafts.

Stephen Sifers

Thanks for the response Stephen!

We're on Cloud and it comes up as an error

Thanks

Hello Rosie,

Thanks for the response.

Can you please send a screen shot of the error or the text the error displays when you attempted to save over the draft?

Regards,
Stephen Sifers

Hello Rosie,

Thank you very much for providing that screenshot with the error message. It allows us to focus in on what the exact issue is.

There is a work around for this that may resolve your issue. Please complete the following steps in order:

  1. Select everything on the page.
  2. Copy (to clipboard) everything you have selected on the page.
  3. Delete everything off the page.
  4. Paste everything you copied back onto the page.
  5. Attempt to save the page again.

Please let us know of the outcome.

Regards,
Stephen Sifers

Hello Rosie,

Sorry to hear the first work around did not work, sometimes that overwrites any changes from other users.

Your issue might be related to a bug in Confluence cloud. CONFCLOUD-58877

The documented workaround for that issue is as follows:

Workaround

  1. Copy the page
  2. Edit the page history and restore a previous version (https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/page-history-and-page-comparison-views-139379.html)

If this resolves the issue I will add this community post to that bug report.

Stephen Sifers
