Can I drag a subtask to a sprint instead of a Task?

Andrea Parrell September 11, 2024

Project has been structured as an epic and all tasks are defined as subtasks under a task. In a sprint if I complete a subtask how can I show this as completed without bringing in the task.

Hi @Andrea Parrell,

Tracking sprints by subtasks is not possible with the default Jira reports and gadgets.

But what you can do if you want to keep your existing project structure is to look for an app on the Atlassian Marketplace that can track sprints by sub-tasks.

If you're open to using an app, our Great Gadgets app offers a full set of gadgets for tracking sprints by sub-tasks: sprint burndown/burnup, team velocity chart, release burndown/burnup with forecast, etc.

Hi @Andrea Parrell,

You can't. Jira and scrum boards are designed with the task / story level of issues as the essential unit of work. The idea is that a task / story needs to completed as a whole to consider it complete. If you have a task level issue with multiple sub-tasks in a sprint, all sub-tasks under that task must be completed before it can be considered complete. Tasks with incomplete sub-tasks will keep moving over into the next sprint until all is complete.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Walter. I am wondering if there is someway to track sub-task completion in a sprint. I may have to change the whole structure of back log. since I have a long term task that will take 6 months to complete  with many subtask that are being tracked weekly

Oh my, @Andrea Parrell - that does not feel right as a task. That's more like a Program Increment with multiple Epics and tasks, just from how you describe it.

While there is nothing like a rule carved in stone for this, I would definitely investigate how you could bring some stuff to higher levels in your hierarchy. Because, no, there is not really a good way to track progress on your sub-tasks.

Since you tagged your question as related to the Premium plan of Jira, you should be able to extend your issue type hierarchy to additional levels above Epics. While I can imagine it's not the most productive work right now, you will probably benefit greatly over time by indeed reorganising your current backlog into higher levels of issues.
