Apparent discrepancy between Settings and displayed Work Types

qrsw June 5, 2025

In Jira, under "Create" and "Create Task," there is a popup field for "Work Type*".

The options under "Work Type" are "Task" and "Epic."

Under the Settings for "Work types" there are "Epic" and "Story," and a custom Work Type I created attempting to follow an online suggestion for creating milestones.

I do not see "Task" under "Work Types" in the Settings, and I do not see "Story" or "Milestone" (the custom name) under "Work Type" in the "Create Task" popup.

Am I missing something, or is there a disconnect between what Settings thinks is a "Work Type" and what "Create Task" thinks is a work type?

Hello, @qrsw ! I hope you are doing well.

In Jira, there are two types of projects - team-managed and company-managed. And to add a new work type, we need to follow different procedures according to the project type. In this Atlassian documentation [LINK HERE], you can see the difference between them.

To add a new work type to your team-managed project, follow the steps in this official documentation [LINK HERE].

If your project is a company-managed one, follow these steps:

1. Go to the project settings;

2. All work/ Issues > Types

3. Click on "Actions" and choose "Edit work type/issue type"

4. Drag the new work type to your current scheme and save the changes.

I see now. This is a "team managed" project, and apparently there is a different "settings" that is not readily apparent from the interface.

Using the settings that are obvious and easily observable from this interface, in the "gear" icon upper right next to the user's portrait, those "Work Types" are … apparently? … irrelevant to anything having to do with "Work Types" in other places (in fact, I'm still not sure what those are a reference to, or where they apply).

The necessary settings are hidden under a "…" menu that is not visible on the interface in normal usage, and requires the user to know in advance that they have to hover their mouse over the Project in the sidebar. This seems like a pretty glaring UX oversight.

Hi QRSW - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Can you share some screenshots? What type of project is this? Team-managed? Company-managed?  How are you getting to "Settings for Work Types"?

I'll post some screenshots shortly, but the last one is easy:

Settings (gear icon next to profile picture)->Work types->Work types.

Originally, items there were "Epic" and "Story." I added "Milestones" according to a posting I'd seen on how to track Milestones in Jira.

I am the only user (it's just me, and I was just looking for an option to track my own project & milestones somewhere), so I guess it's just "me-managed"?

This is why I asked you if it was a Team-managed project, but you didn't answer.
