I would like to send an automated mail to a customer when the status of the issue is set to done.
How do I achieve this and is it even possible?

You can configure notification emails to be sent out to user(s) based on events as mentioned in the Creating a notification scheme.
May I know if you have any specific requirement for the automated email? Perhaps in terms of customized email format or any specific custom events which are not listed in the default ones - Adding a custom event?
