What's the best way of exporting stories to Excel and also being able to see the epic it belongs to on the same row?

How much information about the Epic are you wanting to display?

From the Search Issue screen you can generate a filter to select your stories. When you export the search results, if you select "CSV (all fields)" there will be a field in the output that contains the Issue Key for the parent Epic for the stories. That is the only information directly available in the Stories about their parent epics.

Just to add to @Trudy Claspill's answer, you should look for "Custom field (Epic Link)" in your CSV export.

It's also worth noting that there's a number of add-ons from the Atlassian Marketplace that make it very easy to export straight to Excel. Midori's Better Excel Exporter is a great choice, and it's also really easy in JXL for Jira (the app that I am working on.)

Hope this helps,

Hannes
