Unable to move tasks automatically when dependent task move

Kamal Kishore August 29, 2025

Hi there

I am wondering if there is a way to automatically move Task B, if linked Task A moves in Advanced Roadmap.

HI @Kamal Kishore ,

Is not as direct but you can use auto-scheduling to help in this regard. See similar post in this regard:

Hope this helps.

Thanks @Benjamin  for quick response. I will play around with it and hopefully it will resolve my challenge

Heya Kamal, thanks for reaching out on Community!

Unfortunately the behaviour you've mentioned isn't currently available in Plans. There's a request ticket for it over here https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-88193, as well as this one which is a bit more generic but also kind of covers your use case https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-92491 (ability to move multiple tickets by a relative amount of days).

The current behaviour in Plans is to only allow you to bulk set the same date to all the currently selected work items which isn't ideal for your case.

I'd encourage you to vote on these two tickets so that our Product team can better prioritise the features that you'd like to see in Plans.

Hello @Kamal Kishore ,

In Advanced Roadmaps for Jira, tasks can be linked in such a way that changes to one task can affect others. This is usually managed through dependencies. If you want Task B to automatically move when Task A's schedule changes, you can use dependency management features to achieve this.

Here's how you can set it up:

  1. Create Dependencies:

    • In your plan, make sure Task A and Task B are linked with a dependency. Typically, this is a "blocks" or "is blocked by" relationship.

    • To add a dependency, open your Advanced Roadmap plan, and go to the timeline view. Click on the task bar for Task A, and then drag from the small dot on the right side to Task B. This creates a visual dependency line.

  2. Auto-scheduling:

    • Use the auto-scheduling feature in Advanced Roadmaps. When you reschedule Task A, auto-scheduling will prompt you to adjust Task B's timeline based on the dependency.

    • To enable this, click on the "Schedule" button in the roadmap. Make sure that your dependency settings allow for automatic adjustments.

  3. Configure Dependency Rules:

    • Ensure your plan settings are configured to respect dependencies. Go to "Configure" gear icon in Advanced Roadmaps, and under "Dependencies", make sure that the "Auto-schedule based on dependencies" option is enabled.

    • You can set rules for how dependent tasks should behave when the task they depend on changes.

  4. Manual Adjustments:

    • If auto-scheduling doesn't suit your needs, manual adjustments may still be necessary. When Task A's schedule changes, a prompt may appear to adjust Task B, or you may need to move it manually while considering the new start or end dates.

  5. Review and Adjust:

    • After making changes, review your roadmap to ensure that all dependencies are respected and tasks are scheduled correctly.

By setting up dependencies and using the auto-scheduling feature, you can ensure that Task B will automatically adjust when Task A moves, but always double-check to ensure that all dependencies are correctly configured and that the changes reflect your project's needs.

Thanks @Harpreet . This is really helpful! Is there a way, where I can restrict a particular task to be done only by one individual member?

As per my understanding, Auto schedular will take team availability and then distribute it among tasks, as per priority and dependencies. But, not sure how it caters to a situation where a team has a DB related task which can only be done a particular team member.

This is currently preventing me from using Auto scheduling option
