⚖️ Stop Overcommitting in Sprints with the Sprint Capacity Calculator

How many times have you kicked off a sprint, only to realize halfway through that your team is overloaded?

Or maybe the opposite: you planned too cautiously, and now there’s unused capacity sitting idle. What if you could actually know how much work your team can take on before planning even starts?

That’s exactly what we built the Sprint capacity calculator for in Agile Poker for Jira Cloud.

What is the Sprint capacity calculator?

The Sprint capacity calculator gives you a clear, data-backed view of:

  • How much your team can handle, factoring in availability and historical performance

  • Who’s in or out (vacations, public holidays, part-time folks – you name it)

  • How much spillover work you’re carrying, and what that means for your next sprint

No guesswork. No spreadsheets. Just clarity.

How does it work?

Whether you're running an Interactive or Asynchronous session in Agile Poker, you can access the Sprint capacity calculator directly from the estimation view by clicking Set capacity.

You’ll be prompted to select one of three calculation methods:

  • Guided forecast – Recommended. Calculates capacity based on team members, working days, and baseline story points.

  • Velocity-based – Uses historical data from previous sprints to estimate capacity.

  • Custom formula – Allows you to manually define team capacity in story points.

If you choose to include spillover work from the previous sprint, you can review and adjust story point estimates within Agile Poker. These adjustments do not modify the original estimates in Jira but can optionally be saved as comments for traceability.

Try it in your next sprint

The Sprint capacity calculator is available in Agile Poker for Jira Cloud, both in Interactive and Asynchronous sessions. You can find more information in our documentation.

Give it a go, and let us know what you think. Because great planning isn’t about guessing harder – it’s about knowing better.
