#21 Report of the Week: Sprint Progress & Story Point Flow

Welcome back to our “Report of the Week” series! This week, we’re focusing on the Sprint Progress and Story Point Flow Report, which helps track sprint performance.

21-Story Points Flow.png

This report provides a visual representation of sprint progress, combining several key elements to offer a clear view of how work evolves throughout the sprint:

  • Story Point Distribution – A stacked area chart displays sprint story points across status categories (To Do, In Progress, Done), giving a cumulative flow of work during the sprint.
  • Story Points Resolved – Tracked separately to show completed work and how efficiently tasks are being resolved.
  • Sprint Story Points Guideline – a dashed line representing the ideal burndown path from sprint start to end, helping teams compare actual vs. expected progress.
  • Trend of Remaining Story Points – A linear trend projection to predict the sprint’s completion trajectory based on current progress.

Key Insights:

Assess the total scope of work – understand the complete workload, represented as stacked areas in the chart.

Monitor work distribution – see how tasks are spread across different statuses (To Do, In Progress, Done).

Track progress over time – observe how the stacked areas shift across sprint days to monitor the pace of development.

Compare actual vs. ideal progress – evaluate whether the team is keeping up with the sprint guideline.

Predict sprint completion – use the trend line of remaining story points to anticipate possible sprint outcomes.

By visualizing work accumulation in different statuses over time, you can spot inefficiencies early, improve workload distribution, and ensure a smooth sprint execution.
