#22 Report of the Week: Control Chart for Cycle Time Analysis

It’s time for a Report of the Week ! This week, we’re featuring a powerful Control Chart for Cycle Time Analysis, designed to help measure workflow stability and identify variations in issue resolution times.

22-Control Chart.png

This Control Chart provides a detailed visualization of cycle time variations within the Progress workflow cycle. Here’s what it includes:

🔵 Blue Scatter Points represent the average Progress days, indicating how long issues typically remain in progress.

📈 Dashed Median Line – tracks the median cycle time for issues In Progress, providing a benchmark for normal performance.

🟣 Upper Control Limit & 🟦 Lower Control Limit – these lines represent control limits based on monthly standard deviation, highlighting the expected range of variation.

How to understand the Chart

Understanding control limits is crucial for identifying workflow inefficiencies:

🚨 Above the Upper Control Limit – Indicates unusually long cycle times, suggesting potential bottlenecks or delays.

Below the Lower Control Limit – Represents unusually short cycle times, which may indicate rushed or incomplete work.

Between the Limits – Expected normal variation, meaning the cycle time is stable and within acceptable performance thresholds.

Filters & Customization Options

This report is currently configured to:

  • Show Only Story Issue Types – Providing a focused view of standard work items, but you can choose any issue type as you need.

  • Analyze Data from the Last 12 Months – Offering a long-term perspective on workflow efficiency or choose any period of interest.

  • Highlight the Top 10 Longest Cycle Times – Darker-colored points emphasize the top 10 days with the longest average progress days. Conditional formatting you can point out the critical values.

  • Calculate Monthly Control Limits – Using the median ± standard deviation for precise trend analysis.

Key Insights You Can Gain

This report helps teams:

Monitor Workflow Stability – Understand how consistent issue resolution times are over time.

Detect Process Bottlenecks – Identify unusually long cycle times that may indicate inefficiencies.

Improve Forecasting & Planning – Use trend insights to better estimate future work timelines.

Ensure Process Efficiency – Balance speed and quality by analyzing unusually short cycle times.
