4 Jira Project Roadmap Tips

01-Cover.png

Creating a project roadmap can be long and tedious.

Luckily, these tips (and tools like Visor) can help you develop a more  efficient process.

Whether you’re planning one project or a portfolio of projects, these best practices will make you get the most out of your roadmap.

1. Break your main deliverables into Epics

Breaking your main deliverables for a project into Epics in Jira helps you prioritize AND enhances the readability of your roadmap.

While you may know the intricacies of your project inside and out, external stakeholders need to get a clear grasp of what’s coming and when. Breaking critical parts of your project into Epics allows you to present the “big picture” while leaving room to drill down in the child issues.

2. Make sure ALL your Jira issues have due dates

Ensuring all issues (or at least parent issues) have rough due dates is crucial in creating your roadmap.

Providing a rough timeline with due dates helps you communicate internally and externally to stakeholders and set clear deadlines for your most important deliverables.

Setting due dates is one simple habit that help you prioritize, pivot, and change plans as needed.

3. Add some color to your roadmap

Using color when presenting information has been found to enhance memory performance.

Adding some color coding to your roadmap is visually pleasing and ensures that the information you’re presenting sticks with people, meaning less room for confusion or miscommunication down the line.

In addition, tools like Visor allow you to choose the exact colors you want and format fields based on issue type, progress status, assignee, and more with just a few clicks.

4. Explore tools that make it easy to share your roadmaps

Projects are constantly changing and evolving, so your roadmap must be just as flexible as you are.

Tools like Visor allow you to create different views for different audience.

You can bring in multiple projects or just one. Then, add filters to offer the level of granularity that your audience needs.

Visor also allows you to share your roadmaps with anyone.

And because Visor communicates with Jira through a two-way sync, updates you make to your project in Jira sync over to Visor (and vice versa).

No one knows the value of time like a project manager, and your roadmap should feel like an asset instead of a burden.

Lighten the lift with these tips, along with tools like Visor.

Hello @Becky Brooks - Visor for Jira ,

Does this tool offer a feature to report blockers? In the planning phase, we can indicate which ticket is blocked by another.

Is there a report available in the product roadmap that provides better insights into blockers?

@Akhand Pratap Singh Do you mean Dependencies? We are about to launch that in a week or so. Could probably get you early access if you want to try it out. We also have Milestones, which helps denote key dates and blockers.
