Beyond project deadlines: Get dynamic milestones for projects in Jira

Project milestones are critical signals of progress, accountability, and alignment. They’re essential checkpoints for keeping projects controlled and accountable.

With that in mind, these clear markers of meaningful movement for projects, instead of just task-level actions, provide a general overview, distilling complexity into specific, time-bound project achievements, helping to indicate how success can be measured.

This feature offers value to two key roles (mostly!): PMOs, Project Managers, and key team members:

• For PMOs, it offers the oversight they need to check on projects strategically, allowing them to turn fragmented updates into a unified, trustworthy view of progress across the project portfolio.
  
  
• For Project Managers and key team members, milestones offer awareness about what’s next, when it's due, and whether they’re on track. Milestones function as smart mini-goals that break large deliverables into manageable steps.

Natively, Jira does not provide a dedicated feature for tracking project milestones, and there are different methods to track these milestones, such as:

• Work items labeled as milestones. Here's an example of how milestones and objective setting can be structured in Jira.
  
  
• Using custom fields or labels.
• Taking advantage of the Roadmap feature, recently named Timeline (for team-managed projects).
• Using version releases.
