🧹How to Clean Up Confluence and Remove Unused Attachments?

Running out of space in Confluence?
Trying to clean up old pages or entire spaces?

It might seem easy: just delete some content, remove a few images from the page, and you’re done… right?

Not quite. Here’s the problem:
Even if an attachment is no longer visible on the page, it is still stored in Confluence.
Why? Because removing it from the editor view doesn’t delete the actual file.

This can lead to:

  • Wasted storage space

  • Confusion about where attachments are coming from

  • Frustration when you think you’ve cleaned up, but the storage hasn’t changed

🧐 Where to find and delete unused attachments manually:

  • Go to the page in Confluence

  • In the new UI, click on (i) icon to see the page details

  • Click on 'Attachments'
  • You’ll see all files ever uploaded to that page - even those no longer visible

  • Manually delete each unused file

The problem?
There’s no easy way to check which attachments are actually used on the page and which are just sitting in the background.

āœ… The Solution: Attachments Cleanup Assistant
That’s why I created Attachments Cleanup Assistant a Confluence Cloud app that helps you:

  • Automatically check which attachments are displayed vs unused

  • Delete unused files directly from the app

  • Keep your storage under control without guessing

It’s especially helpful for Free and Standard plans, where storage is limited and there’s no built-in bulk cleanup.

(Here you can check the origin story:
https://lumo.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/acas/pages/1864663069/App+origin+story )

šŸ”§ How it works:

  • The app scans givrn page

  • For each attachment, it checks if it’s actually used in the page content

  • You can review and remove the unused ones in just a few clicks

  • Bonus: there’s an audit log and purge mode if you want to speed things up

šŸš€ Try it out

It's free for small Teams up to 10 users!

āž”ļø Install Attachments Cleanup Assistant

If you’re maintaining Confluence content and want a faster way to stay organized — this might save you hours.

Let me know what you think or if you need help setting it up!

@Lucas Modzelewski _Lumo_ I agree with the utility of cleaning up attachments, having extra files also creates confusion which hurts productivity. We have also created an Attachment Manager app, and will be adding it to Space Content Manager as one of it's content management tools.

Really helpful solution for Confluence cleanup, nicely done! I will go ahead and try it out myself.

If anyone is looking to clean up and organize attachments in Jira as well, our Smart Attachments for Jira app might help. It offers bulk delete, post functions, and more to manage attachments efficiently across your issues.

@Lucas Modzelewski _Lumo_ we agree that it becomes a mess having so many unnecessary attachments.

Attachments that are saved but do not appear on any page are mostly bloat, most assume were deleted when removed from the page. The ability to revert pages isn't important to all spaces and often it only is in the short term, so removing them simply fees up storage and in a large space can improve performance.

Without an app it's extremely difficult to deal with attachments.
