You Can't Rename Groups in Concluence? Here is What You Can Do

If you’ve ever tried to rename a user group in Confluence Data Center, you’ve probably discovered something… unexpected: You can’t.

Not through the UI. Not with a workaround.
If a group is misnamed, outdated, inherited from an old LDAP sync, or just poorly structured - you're stuck.

So what’s the “solution”?
Well, Atlassian doesn’t offer one. So admins resort to the age-old ritual of:

  • Creating a new group with the correct name

  • Manually reapplying all permissions across dozens (or hundreds) of spaces

  • Double- and triple-checking for inconsistencies

  • Hoping nothing was missed and no one loses access

All of that just because you wanted a cleaner group name?
You’re not alone. It's a common headache in Confluence administration - and one that’s quietly eating away at your time, energy, and patience.

The tedious cost of group management

Let’s be honest: Confluence is a powerful tool. But when it comes to managing user groups and permissions at scale, especially in growing organizations, the admin experience can feel painfully manual.

And renaming is just one example. Even routine tasks like:

  • Cloning permissions for a new project team

  • Reusing an existing group setup across a new space

  • Updating category-based access for organizational changes

…often involve repetitive clicking and risk of human error.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a smarter way?

Introducing: Group Permission Copy for Confluence

This app was built specifically for those “why is this so hard?” moments.

It allows Confluence admins to easily copy permissions from one group to another - in just one step.

Want to rename a group?
1. Create the new group (+ add users)
2. Copy all permissions from the old group
3. Done.

But it doesn’t stop there.

You can also:

  • Choose to fully copy or only add missing permissions

  • Apply changes selectively to specific spaces

  • Preview exactly what will be changed before anything goes live

  • Keep track of changes via a built-in history log

No more second-guessing.
No more scattered spreadsheets.
No more late-night permission fixes.

As an admin, you’ve got better things to do than rebuild permissions from scratch!
