Your favorite Jira apps now have advanced editions

App editions are officially coming to the Atlassian Marketplace in Q2 calendar year 2025. However, we’re excited to share that we already have 8 top Jira apps with advanced editions live. Users can view and submit an upgrade request for the apps below ahead of general availability (GA) later this year.

App editions allow teams to upgrade from the standard edition of their app(s) to an advanced edition (where applicable), which provides users with even more exciting capabilities like:

  • Advanced features

  • Extended support coverage

  • More admin insights

Whether you’re an SMB or a large enterprise, there’s an edition for you!

Note: With an advanced edition, you get everything listed under standard plus the additional features listed under advanced. Also, the pricing displayed in the image above is based on 10 users billed monthly.

It's a great step, now the pricing strategy would be more useful.

Wait a second, maybe I'm missing something - but: You've added a new feature for app developers so that they now can charge more for new features, while in the past, they would just have added those features?

I get why this may be a great thing if you happen to be an app developer, but as a customer I'm asking why that is something that you feel you have to share in a newsletter to your paying customers. It's like being punched in the face and then being asked to thank you for it.

Have you already reached peak disconnection with your customer base or is there more to expect?

Great for app developers.
They'll get more money.

Bad for customers.
They'll pay more money.

Yeah...not so good for people paying for the apps. Might be something for the app developers to consider where there is a need to cover increased costs (AI functionality, etc.). If all the new and shiny stuff ends up getting put behind a bigger paywall, it's going to be harder to justify the cost of the apps at all. There's always a need to get more with less, y'know?

This might work for some apps that have a clear delineation between normal (basic or standard) and more advanced features. I can see this being helpful for vendors that need to source additional 3rd party frameworks to improve the functionality of their apps. I think the pushback here is the general frustration users already have with Atlassian products requiring 3rd party apps to get to a nominal and expected level of functionality. This is one reason why ClickUp, Monday.com, and others were able to get so much traction in a space Atlassian should have owned.

Regarding AI functionality, specifically when it involves a flat fee, will probably not be as feasible. For example, The Zephyr test apps already have a basic and more advanced app, which is branded as such. Then you need to purchase their Automate license in addition to be able to receive more AI credits and functionality. Specifically with Zephyr, the AI credits are not enough to incorporate test automation into your CI/CD pipeline. This alone is most likely going to have us looking outside the Atlassian ecosystem to handle this, which is very unfortunate. I am not sure how other vendors incorporate their AI offering, but a "flat fee" approach is probably wishful thinking.

We sincerely appreciate all the feedback received, as your insights are invaluable to us. We understand the concerns regarding the possibility of higher costs for additional features. However, our goal is to align pricing fairly for both our customers and Marketplace Partners.

By mid-Q3 of CY2025, we plan to release free editions. This initiative will empower customers to select from a free, standard, or advanced version of an app, enabling them to pay solely for the features their team truly needs, eliminating the risk of paying for unnecessary features.

While this may seem more beneficial for developers, we believe editions will empower customers by providing them with a range of features and services tailored to diverse business needs and budgets.

As known from Atassian, it takes ages to get major bugs fixed. But if a bugfix is available I would expect a rollout for all customers, what you are doing is creating a vip Membership without any major benefit. Strong Dislike.
