Hello Community!

Let’s talk about something exciting that’s making waves across the Atlassian ecosystem!

We all know that Atlassian has officially achieved FedRAMP Moderate authorization for its Government Cloud and that’s a huge step forward for cloud security and public sector adoption! 🎉

However, beyond the headline, what does this mean for those of us in the Atlassian ecosystem — admins, partners, developers, and Marketplace vendors?

Let’s break it down 👇

🔍 What is FedRAMP, and Why Does It Matter?

FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) is a U.S. government initiative that standardizes security for cloud services used by federal agencies.

There are three levels — Low, Moderate, and High — with Moderate covering sensitive but unclassified information like PII (Personally Identifiable Information). Atlassian confirms that its Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, and Jira Service Management Cloud solutions meet FedRAMP Moderate Authorization for the government cloud.

This paves the way for government agencies and their contractors to confidently adopt Atlassian Cloud — and brings more trust and structure into how security is approached across cloud-based collaboration tools.

💡 Why It’s a Big Deal (Even Beyond the U.S. Government)

While this directly supports government agencies, it sends a clear message to the wider community — security and compliance in the cloud is no longer optional; it’s foundational.

Here’s how this could impact all of us:

  1. Greater trust in cloud adoption
Government adoption has always been a signal of maturity. As Atlassian Cloud meets higher security standards, more organizations — even in regulated industries — may feel confident making the switch.

  2. Increased focus on access control and identity
Agencies (and other organizations following suit) will look for better ways to manage identity, access, and authentication. This means more attention toward secure SSO, MFA, and access provisioning.

  3. Marketplace opportunity for security-conscious solutions
This opens up new possibilities for Marketplace vendors building tools that support secure collaboration, compliance, and identity management, especially those aligning with public sector needs.

  4. Partnership and integration shifts
As Atlassian deepens its public sector reach, there may be increased interest in integrations and services that align with FedRAMP or similar security frameworks.

🔭 What’s Ahead?

Atlassian has also indicated it’s working toward FedRAMP High and IL5 (Impact Level 5), which are critical for agencies like the Department of Defense. So, this is just the beginning of a larger cloud security journey.

For the ecosystem, this is a good time to:

  • Understand the compliance needs of regulated customers

  • Explore how existing tools or services can align with these standards

  • Stay close to Atlassian’s updates around government and enterprise security

🤝 Final Thoughts

FedRAMP authorization isn’t just a checkbox — it’s a sign of where the cloud is headed, and Atlassian is helping lead that charge. Whether you're part of a small dev team or work with large-scale deployments, this is a moment to reimagine what secure collaboration in the cloud can look like.

Looking forward to seeing how the community builds, adapts, and grows with this milestone in place.

Let’s keep the conversation going!

For the apps that are included in the Atlassian Government Cloud Marketplace, does the vendor get a badge to use in the marketplace and on the website?

As of now, there doesn’t seem to be a specific badge provided by Atlassian for apps listed in the Government Cloud Marketplace, at least nothing publicly documented like the Cloud Fortified or Security Participant badges.

That said, Atlassian is working on introducing new badges in the Marketplace to better showcase apps that meet strict data security and privacy standards. One such upcoming badge is Runs on Atlassian, which highlights apps that don’t transmit data outside the Atlassian Cloud and support data residency.
