We are studying the Ativo plugin and cannot figure out the difference between the obligations:

Program Commitments :

  • stretch - The goal of the no-commitment period?
  • extra - The goal of the no-commitment period?

Hi Zoya,

Thank you for trying out Ativo.

  • Stretch is a synonym for "non-committed". Use it when a team plans to deliver a feature, but is unable to commit on it due to risks.
  • Extra refers to a feature (epic) added after the initial (PI) planning. Use it when a team completes all planned features (epics), and is able to do more than planned.
  • "Descoped" refers to a feature (epic) that is removed after the initial PI planning. Use it when a team will be unable to deliver a feature (epics).

TIP - You can filter on these values via the filter > commitment top navigation bar. E.g. you can show the original PI scope by hiding the 'extra' epics.

With kind regards,

Edwin Rozie

@Edwin Rozie Thank you so much for such a quick and complete reply. Can you tell me if we understood correctly that when adding epic to the team's objectives, we additionally need to put a commitment label on the Epic card? Is there no automatic commitment record?

Hi Zoya,

I'd advice to use one or the other systems but not necessary both at the same time.

- Either use team objectives, which can indeed be linked to epics.

- Either don't use team objectives and tag epics (features) directly with commitments.

While you could use both at the same time, this would add the additional administrative overhead.

There is indeed no automatic syncing between both ways (one reason for this is that epics can be linked to multiple objectives at the same time, which would make the epic commitment not deterministic if it is linked both to a committed and an uncommitted objective at the same time).

With kind regards,
Edwin Rozie
