Answering outstanding questions from the Atlassian Ascend Webinar

Hi Everybody!

We were blown away by the engagement we saw on our most recent webinars on September 30 and October 1. This webinar covered:

  • What’s changing and why are we making this change now?

  • How does cloud support DC customer priorities?

  • What are the available pathways to cloud?

  • What next steps should DC customers take?

If you missed it, you can catch a recording of the webinar here.

You can also find a list of resources requested in the Q&A below:

We received hundreds of great questions and lovely notes from attendees during the webinar. Thank you for the kind words! As for the questions, many came in all at once and we weren’t able to answer all of them live on the webinar. So, we’re following up here to make sure we’ve addressed everything:

Questions about data residency and government solutions:

  1. What options are available for organizations that need an air gapped solution?

We are committed to working closely with customers who need air gapped solutions to find a path forward. If you need an air gapped solution to move to cloud, please work closely with your account team to explore potential paths forward.

  1. What options are available for organizations that need to comply with FedRAMP? Especially FedRAMP High or DoD IL 5?

Atlassian Government Cloud is currently available and FedRAMP Moderate authorized.

We are committed to also having FedRAMP High and Impact Level 5 environments built and ready to be submitted for authorization prior to the end of life for Data Center.

In the meantime, we will support you until you can make the transition to a cloud solution that meets your needs. Please work closely with your account team to explore potential paths forward.

  1. What options are available for organizations that need data sovereignty?

In Atlassian Cloud, you can opt to use data residency across 11 locations, which allows you to keep stored data in a region you trust. If the current data residency scope does not meet your requirements, please let us know and follow our cloud roadmap, as we’re working to expand both our regional coverage and the data that is in scope for data residency.

However, we understand that data sovereignty can have implications for how data must be handled and who can access it beyond where it is physically stored.

To support these requirements, we’re currently exploring additional options that would provide you with more protection and ability to meet your regulatory requirements.

Please let us know more about your specific requirements so we can find the best path forward for you.

  1. What options are available for organizations that need data residency in a region that is not currently supported?

We currently support data residency in 11 locations including the EU (Ireland), Germany, the UK, South Korea, Japan, India, Canada, the USA, Singapore, Australia, and Switzerland. See our data residency documentation for details.

If the current data residency scope does not meet your requirements, please let us know and follow our cloud roadmap, as we’re working to expand both our regional coverage and the data that is in scope for data residency.

  1. Does Atlassian plan to support data residency in China?

At this time, we have no plans to support data residency in China. We understand that creates challenges for some customers and we are constantly assessing the available solutions to address this.

Please work closely with your account team in the meantime to explore potential paths forward.

  1. Does Portfolio Insights work in a Data Center environment that is not connected to the internet?

Today, Portfolio Insights requires a connection to the internet to function. Portfolio Insights can be accessed via your Atlassian Cloud account, which you can create for free.

However, we are working on a manual upload option to enable optimization recommendations without a cloud connection. You can read more about what’s coming next on the Portfolio Insights roadmap here.

Questions about add-ons, Bitbucket, and Bamboo:

  1. How can customers who are choosing to remain on Bitbucket Data Center long term access CI/CD functionality, since Bamboo Data Center is being sunset in March 2029?

Bitbucket Pipelines is our native cloud-based CI/CD solution that automatically comes with Bitbucket Cloud.

We are planning to update Bitbucket Pipelines to be compatible with Bitbucket Data Center via the Bitbucket Hybrid License, and can provide an update with more details on timing for this functionality in mid 2026.

  1. Will any technical training be available to help teams make the transition from Bamboo to Bitbucket Pipelines?

Yes, we will provide more in-depth resources next year along with more details about the Bitbucket Hybrid License. Please reach out to us if you’d like to learn more.

  1. Will cloud require any 3rd party add-ons to fully support CI/CD?

Bitbucket Pipelines is our native cloud-based CI/CD solution that automatically comes with Bitbucket Cloud. It should fulfill all of your CI/CD needs without the need for 3rd party add-ons. You can test it out as part of your Cloud Migration Trial to get a better feel for any kind of customization you may want to add.

  1. Will Bitbucket Data Center continue to get security and version upgrades beyond the EOL date?

Yes, Bitbucket Data Center will continue to be supported by Atlassian as part of the Bitbucket Hybrid License beyond the March 2029 EOL date.

  1. Will customers still need an on-premises installed component for plug-ins such as ScriptRunner?

No, many apps have a cloud version that can be installed in cloud. For example, ScriptRunner is available for both Jira Cloud and Confluence Cloud. When you migrate, Atlassian will support you in evaluating your apps and their availability in cloud.

Questions about Atlassian Isolated Cloud and Atlassian Government Cloud:

  1. Will Bitbucket be available in Atlassian Government Cloud and Atlassian Isolated Cloud?

Bitbucket will not be available in Atlassian Government or Isolated Cloud right away. However, we are committed to providing the highest level of parity possible between our two newest deployment models and our current commercial cloud offering. Stay tuned to our roadmap as we execute on this goal.

  1. Will Rovo be available in Atlassian Government Cloud and Atlassian Isolated Cloud?

Rovo will not be available in Atlassian Government or Isolated Cloud right away, but we understand this is a priority for our customers and are working on adding support for Rovo as soon as possible. We are committed to providing the highest level of parity possible between our two newest cloud deployment models and our current commercial cloud offering. Stay tuned to our roadmap as we execute on this goal.

Questions about purchasing, pricing and licensing:

  1. How do I find my Atlassian sales rep?

If you have an Atlassian sales rep, they will likely have reached out to you directly in the past month after our announcement about Data Center end of life. If you’ve not heard from anyone, please reach out here to get in touch with Atlassian.

  1. How long is dual licensing valid? Can it be extended over a year?

Dual licensing allows customers to use both their existing Data Center license and a new Cloud license simultaneously for a limited period to support a smooth migration to Atlassian Cloud. Dual licensing is available by default for 6-12 months based on the size of customer, with extensions available under some circumstances. If you need to extend the term of your dual licensing agreement, work with your account team directly.

  1. How does Community, Open Source, and nonprofit pricing work in cloud?

As in Data Center, Community and open source projects can get free Atlassian Cloud licenses if eligible, and nonprofits can get a 75% discount on Cloud Standard and Premium plans. All programs require an application and eligibility verification.

  1. Is Community and nonprofit pricing available for Atlassian Government Cloud?

We currently offer academic licenses for Atlassian Government Cloud. We do not offer Community licenses, but please reach out to us if FedRAMP Moderate is something your organization needs and we can look into this.

  1. What kind of cloud license is needed to use Portfolio Insights? Is Atlassian Guard enough?

All you need is an Atlassian cloud account and organization to use Portfolio Insights to get your data assessed, receive insights, and more. If you do not have a cloud organization, you can create one for free.

Thanks for the input. However, does Atlassian plan to support data residency in Brazil?

Hi @Marcelo Viana de SiqueiraAt this time, Brazil is not a supported region for data residency. We regularly review our regional offerings and will update our community if there are any changes in the future.

Thanks, @Sarah Joshi. Given the approaching end-of-life for Data Center (March 2029), it’s very important that Brazil be added as a supported data residency region soon. This capability is essential to make Jira Cloud viable for certain government institutions that have strict data sovereignty requirements.

If Brazil does not become a supported region, what alternatives would these institutions have to comply with their national regulations while using Atlassian Cloud?
