What are user-defined artifacts?

I have a Bamboo instance using the expiry option: Build and release artifacts.
I also need builds results to be deleted in order to take an XML backup of Bamboo. It takes ages with the current build result history.
The Complete build & deployment results, build & release artifacts and all logs option seems to be what I need. HOWEVER the current option states "Only user-defined artifacts are deleted" in the documentation.
It is not clear for me what the difference is between both options. Who can tell me what "user defined" means?
