How do I reference a docker image from Google Cloud Container Repository in bitbucket pipeline?

Within the docs (https://confluence.atlassian.com/bitbucket/use-docker-images-as-build-environments-792298897.html) AWS is mentioned.

It seems I could authenticate with 'docker-login' for GCP, but this would require the password being a json file (with line endings). However I can't set an environment variable with line endings... (Which is the only way to specify the password securely as far as I can see...).

Is GCP supported? If so how?
