Can a Bitbucket repository exceed 4 GB? What if our data is larger?

Suhas August 8, 2025

Hi Community,

I understand that Bitbucket repository size has a hard limit of 4 GB. I have a couple of questions related to this:

  1. Is there any way to extend this limit, or is it strictly enforced once the repository reaches 4 GB?
  2. What happens if we try to push data that brings the repository over the 4 GB limit? Will the push be blocked, or is there a warning?
  3. If our data is already larger than 4 GB, what are our options? Are there any recommended best practices for handling large repositories?

Hi @Suhas

Thank you for reaching out to the community.

Allow me to answer the questions:

  1. Unfortunately, there's no option to extend the 4 GB hard limit in a repository, you can, however, utilise the Git LFS storage if you'd like more storage
  2. Indeed, a push will be blocked if that specific push will increase your repository size more than 4 GB
  3. You can either reduce your repository size to be within 4 GB limit, or migrate your large files to Git LFS

Mark C
