Git repo becomes very large because of big .pack file

Wouter Thys June 6, 2025

Hello,

for some reason my repo has become 1.9Gb again.

This was fixed in

https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Bitbucket-questions/How-to-perform-garbage-collection-on-the-repo/qaq-p/2991502

I don't see why this is happening again, there are - as far as I know - no large files in the repo.

  • The full size of the replo seems to be located at the .git\objects\pack\*.pack file
  • I have tried `git reflog expire --expire-unreachable=now --all` and `git gc --prune=now --aggressive` on my local repo, without success.

Maybe someone can help.

Kind regards,

Wouter

Hi @Wouter Thys

I've run Git GC, however, the repo size remains the same.

Could you confirm if you've followed the steps mentioned here on reducing your repo size?

Mark C
