Since the change to app passwords I can't do a git Fetch or Pull. I have created an app password. In trying to Fetch, a Login popup appears asking for a password. I enter my app password and click OK. It fails and gives this error: remote: Bitbucket Cloud recently stopped supporting account passwords for Git authentication.

It doesn't seem to understand the difference between a password and an app password.

Do I need to define something different to get a login popup for an app password?

Thanks, Paul

Hi @Paul Bernard

Welcome to the community.

For your local password, would it be possible for you to clear your stored credentials related to Bitbucket Cloud?

  • Windows: Navigate to Credential Manager and clear stored credentials related to Bitbucket Cloud.
  • Mac OS X: Navigate to Keychain Access and clear stored credentials related to Bitbucket Cloud

After that try to authenticate again using your App password.

You can also refer to this community post for more information.

Hope it helps and let me know how it goes.

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply.

I went to Credential Manager and removed the existing credential, then created a new one for bitbucket.org.

I went to Bitbucket Personal Settings and revoked the existing app password, then created a new one.

I did a TortoiseGit Fetch from File Explorer, entered the app password at the prompt, and it worked!!

Thanks so much for you help on this.

Paul
