Hello community,
I would like to come to know about your experiences with Bitbucket updates. I have never done one before to day the least.
Are there any tips you can give me - like how long to plan for the update, are there any tricky issues I should regard in particular.
It is going to be a major update to version 6!
I hope you can help me out here.
Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Merve
Hello,
I assume you already read the official documentation:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/bitbucketserver/bitbucket-server-upgrade-guide-776640551.html
Since it's a major update, I recommend you read release notes for Bitbucket version 6.
It's very important to take backups before upgrade.
You should check your add-on versions, if they will be compatible after the upgrade.
Also you should check supported platforms, for example, if your db version will be compatible after the upgrade.
One time we upgraded Bitbucket, there was a problem about the elasticsearch that Bitbucket was using. We had to take elasticsearch user and password from BITBUCKET_HOME/shared/search/buckler/buckler.yml file and write it on bitbucket.properties file.
Also check for any other changes on bitbucket.properties file such as context path.
These are what I can think of. As I said I strongly recommend you read official guide and release notes. Good luck.
Regards.
Wow, thanks for the quick answer Elifcan. I appreciate it.
One last question (hopefully) - how long should I plan for the update in total?
Thanks again.
Regards,
Merve

Hi,
Well it depends. How big is your bitbucket instance? How long will it take to back up? Since it's your first time and it's a major update, I recommend at least 4 hours in case of any problems afterwards.
Regards.
