How to request garbage collection from support team

TheresB March 31, 2025

Hello,

I always find people describing their issue (which is: after removal of files to reduce repo size, the size stays the same or increases), which is now also happening to me, but the solution is always that someone on the bitbucket team needs to support you, right? There is no way to do it youself? If this is the case, I would kindly request help to run gc on my repos, thank you!

Hi @TheresB

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

The Atlassian support team that is on here has been notified and they will reach out to you within 2 business days to get this resolved.

Hi @Mikael Sandberg,

unfortunately nobody reached out yet and I still have a erpo with over 700MB that should only be 70MB.. I would really appreciate the help!

Best,

Theres

Hi @TheresB

I can only notify the support team one time per question, so the only thing I can recommend is that you either wait on a response from @Mark C or create a new question.

Hi @TheresB

Welcome to the community.

I've Git GC against your repos, could you check if it reduces the size?

If not, could you provide the current repo sizes you'd like to run GC?

Regards,
Mark C

Hi @Mark C ,

thank you for helping me out!

Unfortunately, the size was not reduzed especially with one repo that I am monitoring. It is 70MB on my local machine but over 700MB on bitbucket.. How would I send you the link, as the repo is private?

Best,

Theres

Hi @Mark C,

I did not hear back from you or another team member unfortunately. My repo is still over 700MB, what can I do?

Best,

Theres

Hi @TheresB

I've run Git GC, unfortunately, the size remains the same at 727 MB.

Could you try to reduce more of your repository size using the BFG tool as mentioned in our guide here?

Regards,
Mark C

Hi @Mark C ,

I am not sure how the tool should help me to reduce the size, as it is already on 70MB when I clone it locally, there arent any large files anymore that could be moved to LFS?

If there exists no way to clean the repo I will probably delete it, as the hassle of going through some external tooling might not be worth it for me.

Thank you anways!

Hi @TheresB

Another option is to import the repository to a new one and see if that helps.

Otherwise, we would need to investigate it further.

Regards,
Mark
