Someone has already added that SSH key

Vijay March 16, 2025

Hi there, I tried to add my SSH key, but getting the error "Someone has already added that SSH key". Can someone help me resolve this? I don't think I own another Bitbucket account or have shared the key.

Thank you!

Hi Vijay and welcome to the community.

The error indicates that the SSH key you are trying to add is already added to another Bitbucket account or to a Bitbucket workspace.

If you'd like to use it, the only way is for the key to be removed first from that account or workspace. Atlassian support cannot remove keys from accounts/workspaces and we also cannot share emails addresses of accounts and IDs of workspaces that are not associated with the email address you are reaching out from.

If you cannot figure out which account or workspace is using your key, you can generate a new SSH key pair for your account:

Thank you, Theodora!

I never used Bitbucket before and using it for the first time. I am sure that the keys have  never been shared or used before.

Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Apologies for the delay, I didn't get a notification on your first reply.

If you get the message "Someone has already added that SSH key", the fact remains that the SSH key you are trying to add is used by another Bitbucket account or workspace. This error doesn't show in any other case, and we cannot remove SSH keys from user accounts or workspaces. If you'd like to use SSH with Bitbucket Cloud, you'll need to use a different SSH key pair.

Kind regards,
Theodora
