how much time to migrate 40G storage of mysql DB to postgreSQL DB for Bitbucket

Gopal Rathi August 15, 2018

When I started the migration from mysql to postgreSQL database from Bitbucket UI , it shows running with the message 'backing up bitbucket home' and I can see some of the data has been migrated to postgreSQL but it's not getting completed. When you refresh the bitbucket page , it will still be on mysql DB.

Can you please suggest how much time probably I should expect for it to transfer 40G of DB storage and where I can see the progress as where its getting failed or stuck.

Nothing from the atlassian bitbucket logs.

Hello Gopal,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

40GB of data is quite a bit of data to move, but it's hard to pin down an estimate as it depends on a variety of factors. First, network. Are these two databases on the same server? And are those databases running on the same server as Bitbucket? If they are all in separate locations then that would be the max of slowdown due to network latency. From there a faster network means a faster transfer.

Second, Read-write speed. How fast is your storage device at reading and writing data? Regardless of where they are, the faster this is the faster you will migrate.

You mentioned that it isn't getting completed, but you seem unsure as to that actually being the case. Could you describe what you are seeing on your end? Are you actually seeing the migration "complete" but you are still on MySQL? Or are you seeing the transfer seemingly get stuck? If it's getting stuck, for how long are you waiting?

Thank you for your response , Aaron.

The databases are hosted in the AWS and it's on separate instance than the Bitbucket Server.

The R/W IOPS is quite good enough with the provisioned IOPS so I dont think it should be an issue.

I waited for long time though 3 + hrs , though if I refresh the page in say around 15 mins after the database migration start , I can access the Bitbucket as usual and in the logs I see the tables have been backed up in postgreSQL database and the migration started message but never saw the migration complete.

and nothing is happening after that.

This is a support request I raised with more details like complete logs - SSP-31217

https://getsupport.atlassian.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/24/SSP-31217?_ga=2.156455163.177971128.1534184741-243591244.1523554734

-Do we need to do any additional steps after the migration ?

-also I dont see the 'bitbucket.properties' file getting updated with newer postgreSQL database details ?

- Do we need to get the postgreSQL JDBC driver in lib folder explicitly or DB migration wizard takes care of everything.

Appreciate your response , looking forward for help further.

Thanks much!
