Unable to migrate to 'main' from 'master' branches

I have created a main branch and am working on it successfully. After configuring the workflow and default branch to 'main', I am still having my repo saying that 'master' is the main branch in BitBucket Cloud and cannot delete it. This is not correct behaviour.

It appears that either:

  1. It just took time for BitBucket to figure out that main was the branch to use; or
  2. There was a pull request pending on master that was blocking the configuration change.
  3. Something else weird.

The problem went away magically.
