Why does my 2FA work for id.atlassian.com but not for bitbucket.org?

I’m having trouble with 2FA between Bitbucket and my Atlassian account.

  • I set up 2FA on id.atlassian.com and verified it works during setup. However, every time I log into bitbucket.org, it fails.
  • I have to use a recovery code.
  • Bitbucket only gives me the option to disable or enable 2FA — no reconfiguration option.
  • Based on the documentation, Bitbucket 2FA is supposed to be managed by Atlassian but this doesn’t seem to be working.

Is there a known issue syncing 2FA between Bitbucket and Atlassian accounts? How can I fix this?

Hello,

Welcome to the community!

Currently, there are two types of two-step verification (2SV) for mobile verification between Atlassian accounts and Bitbucket Cloud.

Atlassian account 2SV provides access across all Atlassian products, while Bitbucket Cloud's 2SV is specific to Bitbucket Cloud and serves as an additional security measure.

This verification is primarily designed for Premium features, requiring two-step verification to access private content - Bitbucket Cloud Premium Features.

In summary, enabling 2SV on Bitbucket Cloud adds an extra layer of security to your repositories and does not sync with your Atlassian account. The two cannot be used interchangeably. You must use the corresponding 2SV code configured with the specific product.

I hope this clears things up!

- Phil
