bitbucket - SaaS vs Data Center

Emanuel Oliveira April 10, 2022

Seems theres 2 options to host bitbucket:

  • SaaS - either free or with subscription, and no need to install/manage as its a SaaS service.
  • Data Center - seems to be the option where we need to download/install bitbucket in either one of major cloud providers aws, gcp, azure, or in our on-prem own servers right ?
    • download docker images for both targets, meaning for example we can manually prepare AWS EC2 machine(s) to run docker and then launch docker image of Bitbucket right ?
    • Is DataCenter option free no matter how many users ?
    • Is there need of subscription ?
    • Is there like 100% free no limits use of the docker image if  no supported needed ?

Thanks, im trying to get the basics of options to have a Bitbucket server:

  • SaaS vs non-SaaS (self installed on-prem or on-private-cloud).
  • cost: free till what limits in both options.
    • SaaS - free till 5 users i think ?
    • non-SaaS - free no limit of users ?
  • support:
    • does it exist on non-SaaS self installation ?
  • Integration with on-prem AD:
    • SaaS - standard support i guess. More details link please ?
    • non-SaaS - is it possible to manually configure integration with on-prem authentication/authorization systems ?

Thanks in advance,
Emanuel Oliveira

Hi  @Emanuel Oliveira ,

welcome to the Atlassian community!

As first question, there are a lot of things to clarify :)

  1. You can install bitcket through a docker image https://hub.docker.com/r/atlassian/bitbucket-server/ it will help you on initial installation
  2. DataCenter is not free. You can get a free trial license for one month (https://my.atlassian.com/license )
  3. You will have support and upgrade availables based on your license validity

All Atlassian tools are available on cloud or data center version. Server licenses are no more available https://www.atlassian.com/migration

About SaaS - AD integration : https://support.atlassian.com/provisioning-users/docs/configure-user-provisioning-for-active-directory-or-ldap/

About non-Saas - AD integration : https://confluence.atlassian.com/bitbucketserver/connect-to-an-ldap-directory-776640403.html

Hope this helps,

Fabio

Great, thanks Fabio for the quick reply.

I thought DataCenter would be free, as its manually installed, maintained by Atlassian clients.
So after installing docker image of Bitbucket-server on - lets imagine - AWS EC2 (single machine), there must exists some process that  bitbucket server will connect to Atlassian informing "hey theres a new DataCenter instance", so Atlassian can figure out the 1st trial month, billing etc.. right ? is there any info on this ?

Server/ DC (on-prem) licensing via license key is self-contained within the product. You create a (trial/commercial) license key on my.atlassian.com and add it to your instance. When the license is up, the product stops certain features like git push, creating pull requests, etc.. You will have to renew your license for another year, enter the new key and voila, all works again.

Hi @Emanuel Oliveira ,

as said by @Ulrich Kuhnhardt _IzymesCo_ , as part of your basic installation you need to require a trial license to Atlassian through https://my.atlassian.com/license

Ciao,

Fabio

Thanks @Ulrich Kuhnhardt _IzymesCo_ and @Fabio Racobaldo _Herzum_

1) trial -> paid | so in DC version after 1st month trial license expires, what we renew would it be another year free or must migrate into payed license ? I suppose its free on 1st month and then must migrate into payed version ?

2) how many service levels exists in DC ? SaaA model have 3 levels: Free for ever up to 5 users, Standard and Premium. I wonder if same 3 levels exists in DC ?

3) Do bitbucket Pipelines exists on all service levels?

  • AtlassianCloud - free for ever ?
  • AtlassianCloud - Standard ?
  • AtlassianCloud - Premium ?
  • DC - trial ?
  • DC any paid model ? I asked in 2) if DC have same SLA as AC (Free/trial, Standard, Premium).

Thanks ~

Emanuel

Thanks so much Ulrich for your help, almost there :) only +2 doubts I got - please check the 2 bullet points down bellow on my inline reply to your reply.

1) yes,

emanuel > ok thanks.

2) https://www.atlassian.com/licensing/data-center#what-does-a-new-data-center-subscription-cost

emanuel: let me rephrase my doubt:

3) a) Pipelines exist for all BBC tiers

emanuel > ok thanks.

     b) On-prem (DC) - https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Bitbucket-questions/BitBucket-Pipelines-on-premise/qaq-p/605548 https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BSERV-9245

emanuel> Ok not available on DataCenter (DC) as per comment in your link "Hi Alexander, Bitbucket Pipelines is only available for Bitbucket Cloud".

Hope that helps! Best, Ulrich
