We are excited to introduce the first release of a new Component Scorecard Data Connection feature. This enhancement is designed to simplify the process of connecting and configuring metric sources for components, ensuring that scorecards are fully set up.
First, some background: scorecards evaluate criteria to generate a score based on either fields or metric values. For a scorecard to be valid for a component, the associated metrics must be properly configured.
When a metric is not set up correctly, the criteria will indicate an error state. There are two types of error states: “metric not connected (at all)” and “metric connected, but no data has come in yet.”
Our goal is to assist component owners in reaching the “metric connected, but no data has come in yet” (i.e., pending) state, allowing them to simply wait for the next value to be received, often triggered by events such as a build or incident.
However, the setup process for metrics can vary depending on the type of metric and the tools the customer is using. This inconsistency creates a lengthy and challenging journey from having no setup to achieving a fully functional scorecard.
Our new feature directly addresses these challenges by offering a structured, user-centric approach to connecting metric data for scorecards linked to components.
It enables users to connect data to components with an applied scorecard directly from the component page. Users can link any built-in metric to a data source from the scorecard drawer, which is accessible from various parts of the product.
There are three types of connection sources available depending on the metric: apps, webhooks, and the API. After selecting a source, an additional “Add link” step prompts users to add a link from the scorecard drawer, if necessary. Also, for any built-in metrics that support webhooks, users can either select an existing webhook or create a new one.
This release not only streamlines the process of connecting data sources but also enhances the overall user experience by providing clear, step-by-step guidance from initial app installation to final data ingestion.
Our aim is to ensure that every user can effortlessly connect their data sources and fully harness the power of scorecards! Let us know what you think.
