Creating Teams in Compass (Reusing Jira Projects / Confluence Spaces as teams?)

Salvesen, Tom (FR) May 6, 2025

All,

I'm looking for some guidance on creating and using teams within Compass specifically, but also in the Atlassian suite in general. I know that Compass has a built in capability to create a team for Compass specifically, but can teams be brought in from other parts of the Atlassian ecosystem?

The example that I have is let's say an organization starts in JIRA and grows their practice in JIRA, but instead of creating boards after projects, they align their JIRA project to a team. Could Compass use JIRA projects as a team?

Another example could be that an organization starts using Confluence and they have created their Confluence spaces based on teams. Could Compass use a Confluence Space to define a team.

It feels difficult to align the team construct across the different tools in the ecosystem and I could use some advice on the best way to set up a team so that one team can be used across any Atlassian product (ie. central team creation and management).

Thanks!

Hi @Salvesen, Tom (FR)

Thank you for reaching out!

Teams are shared across all products in the Atlassian suite. So a team that gets created in Compass can be used in Jira, Confluence, JSM and so on.

The example that I have is let's say an organization starts in JIRA and grows their practice in JIRA, but instead of creating boards after projects, they align their JIRA project to a team. Could Compass use JIRA projects as a team?

This is an interesting use case. How would you expect that to work? Any person with a ticket assigned in that project would be a part of that 'team'?

Andrei,

Thanks for your response. In short, yes. Anyone working items on that board is part of the same team.

After posting, I came across this in my menu options below. It seems obvious that this is the starting point to create teams now. I want to confirm that a)yes that is the case and b) if we create teams here, those same teams will be available to use across Atlassian's portfolio.

Thanks for your quick response and have a great day!

Hey Tom,

Yup, same exact teams. No real difference in where the creation happens, though some products might have slight variations around the experience for the creation modal.

With teams, one thing we're rolling out is automating membership via an IdP, which somewhat streamlines having your "verified" teams be up to date.

Let me know if you run into any more issues with this, happy to help out!
