Hi everyone!
We have a fun addition, to the Live Docs beta, that's rolling out next week that will offer you the option to control where the editing toolbar lives. We understand that different users have different preferences when it comes to editing workflows and there has been a big ask for a more contextual experience - i.e. “only show me edit controls when I’m actually trying to edit, otherwise don’t crowd my viewing area.”
Customizable Editing Experience:
With this update, users will have the option to personalize their editing experience by selecting between two modes:
Pinned toolbar (existing default on Pages): Users can choose to have the toolbar pinned to the top of the page, providing constant access to editing tools as they navigate through the content.
Unpinned toolbar (new default on Live Docs): Alternatively, users can opt for a more dynamic experience where the toolbar appears only when they engage with content on the page. This contextual approach minimizes distractions and creates a visually cleaner workspace.
You can access the option to pin or unpin your editing toolbar using the three dot ellipses from whichever experience you’re currently in.
Live Docs are defaulting to an unpinned editor toolbar experience
With this rollout of the option to control where your editing tool bar lives, we’re making the default experience for Live Docs unpinned to align to the beta feedback asks we’ve heard so far. We highly encourage you to share the news of this change with the users on your Confluence site so they know to expect it (and that they can pin it back to the top if they want!). We’ll be providing in-product notifications on this change for them as well, but an advanced heads up goes a long way.
But wait, there’s more: Making it easier to add page elements
You’ll also notice as part of this rollout that we’re making it easier to insert elements into your work. From tables, to emojis, to working with Atlassian Intelligence - the new floating plus button gives you faster access to adding the things you love to your work in Confluence pages.
Feedback and Support:
We are eager to hear your feedback on this update. Let us know in the comments below what you think or feel free to schedule time to chat with us directly here.
Is this part of the new content layout beta as well? |
Yes. If your Confluence Cloud site is enrolled in the new content layout beta then you will also see these new editor toolbar pinning options available to you. |
Is the editor toolbar choice per content type? For example, if I want the unpinned experience for Pages but the pinned experience for Live Docs, can I do that? |
No. Choosing a default experience for one, changes the experience for the other for consistency. |
Can I opt-out of this editor toolbar update, but still be in the Live Docs beta? |
There is not a self-serve method for opting out of the new editing toolbar pinning experience. If you’re experiencing a significant impact to how your users are able to work in Confluence as a result of this change and need specific assistance, please submit a support request since this helps us respond quickly and with the right resources. |
As an admin, can I enable/disable this editor toolbar capability per user? |
No. This capability is controlled at the Confluence Cloud site level. |
Does this editor tool bar change impact Whiteboards & Databases? |
No. This update only impacts Pages & Live Docs for Confluence Cloud sites currently enrolled in either the Live Docs or new content layout betas. |
