Confluence’s new navigation is here!

Many of you have been asking when you can adopt Atlassian’s new navigation—now you can! We’re thrilled to announce its General Availability (GA) for Jira, Jira Service Management, Jira Product Discovery, Confluence, and Atlassian Home. In this article, you’ll find key details about what’s changing in Confluence and when those changes will occur.

What’s changing in Confluence?

The new navigation is centered around customization capabilities and ease-of-use improvements. Designed to feel familiar to anyone who uses software products, it’s also the foundation for new features that are being built and will ship soon. We want to ensure everyone can take advantage of these enhancements as they roll out across all Atlassian products. Read about how we built the new navigation.

Before after.png

Here are key features for Confluence's new navigation:

Simplified top navigation

1.png

Simplified top navigation that prioritizes search makes it easier to access what you’re looking for with fewer clicks while staying in the context of your work. By reducing clutter and friction, we’re enabling teams to stay in the flow better, directing focus towards key content.

Navigation starts from the sidebar

2.png

Work across multiple spaces straight from the sidebar.

  • For you: A personalized hub with your recently viewed pages alongside popular content, all curated for easy discovery

  • Recent: Pages, blogs, and whiteboards, and other content you’ve visited.

  • Starred: Essential items you’ve marked with a star.

Show or hide the sidebar

3.png

If the sidebar takes up too much space, you can either resize or collapse it. You’ll always be able to expand the sidebar when you need to navigate again.

Customize your sidebar

4.png

Show, reorder, and hide navigation items by going to More (Three-dot menu.png) > Customize sidebar.

  1. Customize your sidebar

  2. Drag the line to customize

  3. Drag the item or check the checkbox to show, reorder, or hide

    1. Show items: To add items to your sidebar, simply drag them above the Hide from sidebar line.

    2. Hide items: To remove items from your sidebar, drag them below the Hide from sidebar line. Alternatively, drag the Hide from sidebar line above the items you want to hide.

    3. Reorder items: To rearrange the order of items in your sidebar, drag them to your preferred positions.

Note: Customizing the sidebar will affect only you and not anyone on your site.

Space settings

5.png

As an admin, you can access space settings by selecting More actions (Three-dot menu.png) next to a space’s name.

Apps6.png

From the sidebar, you can access both your system and Marketplace apps. Admins can select More actions (Three-dot menu.png) next to Apps to find and manage apps.

What to expect?

We know you and your teams have carefully built workflows around our products, so managing change is essential. That’s why we’ve taken a gradual, thoughtful approach to the rollout—actively listening to feedback and refining the experience along the way. Starting March 17, 2025, we’ll progressively roll out the new navigation to all Confluence users, along with Jira and Atlassian Home.

See the table below to know when you can expect the new navigation for your sites.

Note:

  • The rollout will begin at the indicated date, but it may take up to 3-7 days to reach all sites.
  • Rollout timing is based on PST, typically at 5.45 p.m.
  • The timelines are subject to change, and we’ll provide more details as the dates approach. Keep an eye on this page and check the public roadmap for the latest updates and more information on the new navigation.

Admin controls for new navigation

We know that change can be challenging, and introducing new changes to your team needs planning. So to ensure you and your team are comfortable with the new navigation, we’re giving admins additional flexibility.

If you’re an admin:

  • You can turn on the new navigation only for yourself

  • You can turn on the new navigation for everyone on the site

To access admin controls for new navigation:

  1. From the top right corner, select Settings > Configuration.

  2. Go to New features to see the controls for New navigation.

admin controls.png

As an admin, you can delay turning on the new navigation for everyone on your site for a few weeks (3-8 weeks) before we enable it by default.

Once the new navigation has been turned on for everyone on the site, you and your users can’t go back to the old navigation.

HI,
The new features window is empty, so currently there isn't an ability to control the rollout

But how can we control intarnally the rollout that is starting today if the tool to control it will be released in mid April?

I think the rollout itself starts in mid-april 2025 not only the feature "optional opt-in".
So if you were not notified from Atlassian, you will still have to wait another month until the feature will be optionally available for you.

The new navigation is really frustrating, as it is in your way, having to expand it all the time when you work with things inside a project.

I wish Atlassian would focus less on cosmetic changes and more on things that really need attention and can deliver much more value. Like the lackluster progress of Confluence databases.

It's said that you'll be able to enable this in advance in the sandbox. Is that still the case, and if so, when?

Chris Sprucefield April 4, 2025

@jeroen Don't hold your hopes up, as they have come to listen less and less to the clients and what they think, and focus on - as you say, cosmetics, rather than actual real improvements, and this seems to go for the entire product lineup.
There are things that has been broken for years now in the cloud, that just used to work, and there is no fix in sight. I am looking at alternatives more and more.

Will this be automatically rolled out to Data Center instances as well?

Chris Sprucefield April 7, 2025

@Judah The DataCenter product is a self-hosted solution, and completely different from the cloud offering.
There are no "automatic" rollouts in the same way as cloud, and while it may be refeflected in subsequent versions, they are very different products.

"Simplified top navigation" is just replacing useful buttons with white space and a search bar. This is the equivalent of hiding the coffee maker behind a cupboard door because you want your kitchen to look clean but now requires extra work for things you do multiple times a day.

Fashion over form is not why I use Atlassian products

Should we be able to turn the new UI in sandbox now?

Question:

On our sandbox I clicked the button "Enable for everyone" and then 2 other admin checked their settings afterwards and it was not enabled for them, meaning they had to enable it for themselves.

So I wonder what will it be for normal non-admin users on Prod? Will the new navigation be enabled for them without the option to toggle it off for now?

April 16, 2025

@Hope Man

  • A normal non-admin user on prod will get the new navigation when one of the admins enable it for the site.
  • For Confluence, once an admin enables the new navigation for the site, users can't turn it off.

Is there any way of keeping the old navigation, which was "out of the way", and focused on the content of the space, rather than clogging half the sidebar with things completely irrelevant to the content and function of the space?

The old navigation was far more compact and less intrusive, and far more intuitive...
This goes for Jira as well...

There is a LOT of users that don't like the new navigation, and i know they are starting to look for alternatives the way this is going now, with "flashy" over function, and all "just because", as nothing is made better, or is this just another one of these - "live with it and pay up!" ?

Hi @Varsha Patel

I have a few confirmation questions...

  1. How do regular Users OPT IN (Turn On/Off) the new navigation in Jira and Confluence Sandbox?
    • Did I misunderstand and instead this ability is ONLY for Admins?
  2. And, once we "Turn on for Everyone" then there's no going back for Admins and regular users?
  3. And, if only admins can OPT-IN for themselves in the sandbox, then what happens in the Production sites?
    • When the New Nav is made available to our production sites, will regular USERS then have the ability to OPT-IN / OPT-OUT, as they desire (until the force-date)?

Thanks,

Mark

@Mark B Wager

1. For Confluence, the ability is only for admins. Once an admin turns on the new navigation for everyone on the site in a Sandbox, regular users can’t turn it off.

However, for Jira and Atlassian Home, regular users can turn on/off the new navigation for a certain period of time (depending on the plan) in production and Sandbox sites.

2. Confluence has added the ability for admins to turn off the new navigation for all users after it's been turned on.

However, in July 2025 (phase 2), admins and end users will be forced onto the new navigation, and there's no going back. See the rollout phases here.

3. If admins turn on the new navigation only for themselves, only admins can see the navigation (not regular users). Regular will not have the option to opt in/out once the admin turns it on for them.

So no response to my comment, @Varsha Patel ?

I'd love to see Atlassian's explanation for changing "Home" to "For you." Utterly pointless, adds zero value. It is the exact same dashboard page, but now I have to retrain company employees who are used to finding the Home button in the top menu to instead look for "For you" in the vertical sidebar.  Even worse, foolishly moving the "Company hub" link from the easily found location in the top menu to be hidden under "More" in the sidebar - absurd. We keep links to our most used spaces in the Company hub so they can easily be found by employees - now that will be far less helpful. I wish Atlassian would seek more feedback from users before rolling this stuff out.
