2GB File Storage limit

Chris Birley September 8, 2021

im currently running a Confluence server instance, but need tolook a migrating it to new hardware sue to warranty etc etc etc. ive seen that i can no longer get a server license, and due to the current size of the system, looking at data centre is not feasible. ive seen the free cloud basd version, but have a question with regards to the wording of the 2GB limit. looking at my current instance, the database is about 9GB, but ive got about 900Mb of attachments. is the 2GB file storage limit the whole site - database and attachements, or only attachements? just wondering whether i can migrate to the free cloud version, or if i would have issues doing that?

Hi @Chris Birley ,

Glad you're going well with a migration! I just wanted to post a clarification - the 2GB limit on Free plans is for file storage, specifically meaning attachments in Confluence. These items are visible in the Attachments information on pages, and in the attachments directory on the Confluence instance's file system. The database size, which includes the text content of pages and drafts, does not factor in to this.

As you noted, the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant can give you a rollup of this information. For example, in the demonstration screenshot of the migration assistant, you can see the breakdown between media (attachments), and pages/drafts:

There are many other reasons you may want to consider the Standard plan - including features like space permissions. But I hope this provides a quick way of determining the file storage limitations when making that assessment.

Hi Daniel

that makes sense. migrated successfully and using the free version at the moment happily. ill keep my eye on the standard plan for when we may get to a position that it is required- thanks

Hi @Chris Birley ,

the 2GB limit is for everything hosted in Confluence : pages, attachments, images, ...

So you can reach the limit even if you have no attachments but have like 10 000 pages.

However, your current database size might not be exactly the same once you migrate to Cloud : I would advise trying a first migration to a test Cloud instance and check how much space your instance takes.

But 9GB on a Server database might actually be a bit too much for the Free plan, you might need to get on the Standard plan.

You can have a look at this page regarding storage limits : https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloud/atlassian-cloud-storage-policy-873871366.html

Let me know if this helps,
