Can the REST API be used to import lots of microsoft word documents with Confluence markup?

I'm trying to automate the import process, which involves .docx files with Confluence markup. Does the API have a method for creating pages/spaces and then importing a word document?

sure. You first create a new empty page and the page ID is returned. With this ID you can attach what every you want. Then you alter the page adding markup code to display your word documents.
