Can we avoid the blank what's new pop-up after Confluence upgrade?

We upgraded confluence from 5.3 to 5.4, and at login we get a blank "what's new" pop-up. We disabled the What's New plugin to make this stop, but is there some "what's new" information that we should be sharing with the users? Disabling the plugin feels like a drastic action.
