Confluence 5.9.3 export to HTML results in one large unusable file

I keep trying to export a space to HTML and haven't had any success. I'm on Confluence 5.9.3.

I use Content Tools > Export > Normal Export (or Custom Export), and after I run the export, I get a zip file that's 7.1MB in size. When I extract it (either using Archive Utility or the unzip command in Terminal), it extracts the file into a single HTML file.

When I open the HTML file (in BBEdit, Text Edit, a browser), I get a file full of characters, like this:

<snip>

nôE©Â˘EŸ≈

</snip>

I'm expecting the zip file to extract into a series of HTML files, like the UI says ("Generates a HTML file for each page in this space, excluding blogs, comments, and attachments.")

Has anyone else seen this? Anyone know how I can get this to work? Thanks!
