Confluence Home folder in Upgrade

Is the home folder for Confluence always the same no matter what version you are running e.g

I want to upgrade from 2.10 to 3.1, I install 3.1 and now my confluence-init.properties in 3.1 is pointing to the home directory - the same home directory that 2.10 was pointing to before?

Sorry if this question is stupid but I am a little confused about this and I am running into issues during my upgrade.

Depends on what you mean by "the same".

The folder would be the same, but the contents would get updated with the new version.

Your Confluence home will always be the same folder location regardless of which version of confluence you are running.

Thanks for your reply Robert. So when I download and install confluence, do I need to copy files from the new install into the confluence home or does the folder get updated itself during the upgrade.

The reason I am asking is because I upgraded from 2.10 to 3.1. When I started Confluence the setup wizard appeared. An error appeared stating here was a database already setup and if I continued I would overwrite the confluence table. When I researched this I found that there was likely an issue with my Confluence Home.

If you were able to successfuly migrate your 2.10 environment then the 3.1 upgrade should be fairly straightforward. I have not done a standalone upgrade before but the theory should be the same. You don't change anything in the home folder, the upgrade process should take care of it for you.

Personally, I would have stayed with the EAR/WAR install, rather than go to the standalone, but if you don't have access to a tomcat guy I guess standalone is a valid option.

Unfortunately we didnt have access to a tomcat person but you were right I was running an install and not an upgrade. I managed to fix it there and it upgraded with no issues.

Sounds like you did an install and not an upgrade.

You should take a backup of your home directory before starting the upgrade process in any case. The only files you need to copy from the install image are the actual confluence applications (usually under the tomcat folder. The data will get upgraded the first time you start the application.

I haven't worked with v2, I started with our 3.3.3 installation, so I'm not 100% sure that the process was identical, but I'd assume that it is. Are you doing the stand-alone upgrade or the EAR/WAR upgrade?? The process might be slightly different between the two.

The 2.10 installation was an EAR/WAR install. I am moving to a standalone installtion for 3.1. Reason being I had to migrate from Weblogic to Tomcat. There was no 2.10 cluster standalone download available so the next one was 3.1 so I am doing a migration and an upgrade all in one. The migration part went fine its just I can seem to get my head around what is copied over and what is not with the home folder.
