Confluence Migration: Server to Cloud

Hi,

I'm trying to take my company's knowledge base and port it to confluence cloud from confluence server. I want it to be alongside the JIRA cloud page i've just created. What i've done is create a backup by doing this:

http://confluence:8090/display/CKB/CorPath+Knowledge+Base
-choose the "gear" -> General Configuration. Scroll all the way down and click Backup and Restore -> Backup attachments -> Backup

Upload it to webdav

I then go to company.atlassian.net and click the "gear" -> General Configuration -> import spaces. I then select the xml file from webdav and click import. It says

• Only Confluence space exports can be imported.

Any ideas?

Maren here from Atlassian. For anyone running into this same issue, check that you aren't trying to import a full site backup using the space import functionality.

Hi Maren,

Am trying to migrate a space from one instance(server) to cloud. my customer has provided me with the space xml. We do not have control over the server instance (also, there is a firewall block between the server instance and cloud)and hence we cannot user the cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence plugin . Please suggest a workaround .

A great question.

Do you know what server version your customer is on? Space import is the best option given your situation, however, this method won't work if the space you're importing is from Confluence Server version 6.13 or earlier.

If it is from an earlier version, here’s our suggested workaround:

1. Sign up for and install a free evaluator license for Confluence Server (version 6.14 or higher).
2. Import the space to that evaluator instance. 
3. Re-export the space from that server evaluator instance. Now you should have  an export file that is compatible with Confluence Cloud. 
4. Then, import the new space export to cloud using space import (linked above).

Hi, Derek.

Unfortunately, when you have JIRA+Confluence Cloud instance, you cannot do full site restored in Confluence. You can do full site import in JIRA (whether in instance is JIRA only or JIRA and Confluence), but full site in Confluence only works in Confluence only instances.

There are two options you may want to consider:

1. Do a space by space migration from Confluence Server to Cloud (add-ons data will now be carried along)
2. (Radical solution) Add Confluence first:
   1. Have a backup of your current JIRA
   2. Destroy current instance
   3. Create Confluence only instance with same URL
   4. Fully import Confluence (as it's now a Confluence only instance)
   5. Add JIRA
   6. Fully import JIRA

It's important to point out that 2 may cause problems with users, as when adding JIRA you'll remove every user added by Confluence. If you want to go for it, make user the usernames and emails in JIRA and Confluence match. Also, any user in Confluence would have to be added via CSV later.

Also, if you go with 2, you should test it first (before destroying your instance).
