Confluence & Jira - how does one install them together?

I have  a couple of licenses for Confluence, one is supposed to go with Jira Core, the other with Service Desk. I am just starting to employ this with small teams.

I read the database requirements for MySQL and got a Jira Core instance running with that. Now I want Confluence, but I see prohibitions about installing it in "the same Tomcat container" as another product. What does this mean?

My Atlassian stuff is in a virtual machine that lives on a server along with VMs that provide Open Semantic Search and Spiderfoot. The underlying server makes some of its storage available to the other machines as both paths as well as via web. The overall objective is to provide project management and a knowledge base that can be used to describe the things unearthed with the other two tools.

MySQL is on the underlying server system and I'm familiar enough with it to put it where it needs to be, back it up, move it around, etc. The mysql.cnf meets the requirements for both Jira Core and Confluence.

Should I install Confluence on the same VM as Jira Core, by doing something to provide a separate Tomcat container, or is this something that should be on a virtual machine by itself?

"installing it in the same Tomcat container" means that you do not want to install confluence over jira, i.e. having both jira and confluence running on localhost:8090 or xxx.domain.com instead you would want to split it, on localhost that is usually setting one jira to port 8090 and confluence to 8091 or whatever.  On a domain it would look something like xxx.domain.com/jira and xxx.domain.com/confluence. 

Just think of them as two entirely separate software and you will probably do fine. 

Once both are installed you can set up application links between them, you should also think of how to handle user management, this is less an issue if you connect to an AD and SSO solution than if you use the internal directory where you might want to let confluence use Jiras directory so that people can change between them without logging in again.

OK - that is an excellent response - one VM is fine, just use different ports. Our front end is nginx, so this is easily done.

Our teams are tiny - one has three users, the other has five. We don't have AD/LDAP, but we are using Cloudflare Access since everyone is remote. So each software has its own user database? Not a hassle for less than a dozen people, but I think we will have more than just two teams before long.

Each software has its own user directory but Confluence can use Jiras user directory instead. This is configured after installing both applications.  It is not difficult and I would highly recommend it unless there is a wide diversity on who will use what application.
