Confluence pages very slow when editing: how can I speed them up?

Pages in Confluence becoming too slow when editing them. This mainly happens when you have large pages (but not too large, e.g 9 minute read). We want to use the collaborative features of Confluence, but this makes it difficult to incorperate comments from colleagues into the document. I do not have this problem when using Google Docs with much larger documents.

Steps taken so far

• Break down document into smaller sections
  • Already have. Is there a word limit to Confluence pages we should be aware of?
• Use Firefox instead of Chrome and disable spellcheck 
  • My problem is present on both Chrome and Firefox. Spell check is also disabled

How can I speed up the editing speed of Confluence pages, preferably without disrupting my workflow?
