Hi Mark,
We usually recommend that both apps have the same major AppLink version. You can compare these versions from the Application links version matrix. You can check your version by going to the System Information page in your instances.
Additionally, by checking the information on using Jira Applications and Confluence together, you will be able to tell which features are or are not available to you.
You may also be aware that Confluence 5.10 will reach end of life in the beginning of June, so you may want to consider upgrading in the near future.
