Trying to determine if the system restricts multiple people from opening the same file to edit? Or does the system allow multiple edits and then merges the changes. Or it always multiple people to open but only 1 can save the changes?
Assuming you mean "attachment" when you say "document", then it is not a document management system and keeps it very simple. You download a doc, work on it and then upload the new copy. Confluence will version each incoming version in the order in which they arrive.
If by "document", you mean "page", then you'll find it has collaborative editing, so you can see what people are doing in real-time, and a save commits everything as-is.
Document meaning file. So it seems if someone uploaded a new file, while someone still had a version out, it will merge the 2 changes when the second file gets uploaded or only the first save after opening, will get updated?
