We have upgraded 2 servers and neither of them can display emoticons in the editor.
Have tried all the workarounds, like clearing caches, removing work folder and all the plugin folders, all to no avail.
Anyone know why this has happened after the upgrade and how to resolve it?
The problem is tomcat, versions after 9.0.13 have broken confluence.
Downgrade the shipped version with confluence to 9.0.13 or earlier.
For more information: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-58180.
A new version will be shipped to fix this issue. In the meantime, downgrading could do the trick as Chris said!

No need to worry, this has in fact been a big deal for Atlassian, they have pulled 6.15.3 from releases and have fixed the underlying issue, see https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/issues-resolved-in-6-15-3-969523133.html

I have reached out to Altassian, and have raised a support ticket. They think it is an environmental issue - likely not. We have 2 independant sites with the same problem with very little in common, now others have this issue too.

Hi Chris,
unfortunately the issue isn't open to the public.

I am having the exact same problem with emoticons and the profile picture on pages. v6.15.1 worked fine, but I upgraded to 6.15.3 this past Friday and it's broken. I've tried the following, and likely more that I'm forgetting.
1. Safe mode (no plugins)
2. Disabled proxy
3. Cleared all Confluence caches
4. Restarts
- This happens in any browser.
- I can go directly to the image and it works fine. It's only through a Confluence page that images do not serve. ex. /s/en_US/8100/a516614738a0811691ee4368be900fdd7a640552/_/images/icons/emoticons/help_16.svg
- Logs Apache HTTPd (proxy) and Tomcat logs do not show any problems.
- Other than this issue, Confluence seems to be working as it should.
