Error Importing space from another cloud account

Alan Lindsay

July 9, 2020

I have followed the instructions on exporting a space from one account and when I try import into another account I just get

The following error(s) occurred:

  • There was an error during import. Please see our guide to raising a bug report.

But I can't create a bug report because its not a paid account. And there are no other useful errors messages. What do I do next?

Hello Alan,

Thank you for raising this with us. Can you confirm that you are still experiencing this issue?

If you are still encountering the problem, can you confirm if the space export was created in the XML format? HTML and PDF will not work in this case.

You will also want to make sure that the space name and key don't already exist, as that will cause issues on import.

Lastly, I trust that you followed the correct procedure, but I just want to go over it here in case there were any doubts, or for any future readers of this post.

Export Space to XML

See Export Content to Word, PDF, HTML, and XML for full instructions:

  1. Click on the space name in the navigation, and click Space Settings, then click the Content tools tab
  2. Click Export
  3. Select XML, then hit Next.
  4. Choose either a full or custom XML export:
    • Full Export (XML) – to produce an XML file containing all the pages in the space, including those that you don't have permission to view.
    • Custom Export – if you want to export selected pages only, or if you want to exclude comments from the export.
  5. Click Export.

Import Space to Confluence

See Import a Confluence Cloud Space for full instructions:

  1. Log in to your Confluence Cloud site
  2. Select (Settings) in the Confluence navigation
  3. Choose Import Spaces under 'Administration' in the left-hand navigation bar
  4. Specify your file using the Browse buttonIf you're using Jira Cloud, you can also specify the Jira project you'd like to link to this space.
  5. Choose Import.

If this is the correct procedure that you followed, and you can confirm this not a duplicate space, and is a full space export to XML, then we'll need to investigate further to know why the import is failing. I can help you with that, but I want to confirm these things first.

Take care,

Shannon
