How are attached MS Office files treated for concurrent editing?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Edit Office Files

How are files locked when we click on "edit in office" in an attachment page? Will concurrent changes to the same document by multiple editors be merged or not? What is required to merge concurrent edit changes (e.g does it assume somethign from Microsoft on the server). The documentation is unclear here.

If we want to prevent users editing the same document at the same time do we still need the Arsenale Lockpoint Macro for this?

Will the Office Connector support concurrent editing of office files in the future?

Confluence doesn't lock files when you use the Edit in Office function. You download a copy of the file. When you save the file, the new one is uploaded as a new version of the attachment. There is no way to merge attachment changes from what I can imagine.

Confluence Pages support page merging. Confluence Pages will support live concurrent editing soon.

Since concurrent editing of Office documents is not possible or clunky at best, is there a way to block muliple people opening and editing the document at the same time?
