How can I improve default confluence search without expensive plug-ins?

I'm using version 6.3.3 on server and trying to find out whether there's anything I can do to improve the search capabilities/functionality after several complaints from my teams about the terms they use vs. the results that are returned

I have looked in to a few 3rd party options but they just so expensive! Any help would be appreciated.

We just installed ifinder and the teams are getting very accurate results and it also searches within any uploaded documents. Link: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220508/ifinder-confluence-search?tab=pricing&hosting=server
