How do I add variables in a Confluence template?

John Schram May 13, 2020

I've had an issue adding multiple instances of the same variable to a template in Confluence 6.15.8.  When I select an existing variable name from the insert dropdown it adds the variable with an incrementing number of $'s prepended (i.e. first instance is $var1, second usage gets called $$var1, etc.)

Each one needs to be entered separately, which feels like a bug. Any ideas?

Hello John,

Thank you for reporting this, and welcome to Atlassian Community.

This appears to be an issue with the Template menu, which I've logged in the bug below:

  • CONFSERVER-59826 Additional $ added to variable when reusing variables in templates

I'm able to reuse a variable if I type the $ shortcut instead, and choose the desired variable. Just make sure not to select the ones that start with $; those are your duplicates.

Please vote on the bug to help us properly prioritize this according to our Bug Fixing Policy. You'll also be automatically added to the list of watchers to get updates in the future.

Let me know if that workaround doesn't work for you!

Shannon
