How do I organize Confluence Documents alphabetically by default?

Jason Young March 27, 2025

Kia ora Team,

I'm in Space Settings within Confluence, I click on my space, expand the icon, then I expand my documentation icon, in which it shows a A-Z down-arrow, this will organize it to A-Z format, which is good, but the organization doesn't stick. It's like there should be a save button, but there isn't, so I can't save the organization to A-Z.

@Jason Young I did some searching, and this appears to be an issue people have had for a while.

I found this related ticket: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-65454

And this 2018 post that people are still commenting on, which indicates there has been no update on this feature: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Confluence-Cloud-Admins/Update-to-default-sort-order-for-newly-created-pages/td-p/955068

I see nothing in the Confluence Settings (gear icon next to your profile picture) or even your Personal Setting (profile menu) about how to change it so that the word DEFAULT appears next to Title - A to Z, instead of Tree.

Thanks for that. I saw another comment that A-Z ordering only works with new spaces. If this is the case, is there a way to clone a space, so the new cloned space is considered new, and the A-Z sort should work as intended?

Hi @Jason Young and Welcome to Community.

Would this work?

Yes, I've tried this, the A-Z does organize the pages, but it doesn't stay organized. Once I refresh the page, it goes back to the non-organized settings.

@Jason Young

This is weird because it's working for me as expected:

I refreshed the page, I closed it and re-opened - and it stayed there.

I wonder if it might be a permissions thing ... or affected by browser/extensions.

I'm an admin and I'm on Chrome Version 134.0.6998.166 (Official Build) (arm64).
