How do I prevent Confluence from applying formatting to plain text

If I paste "ALTER TABLE `DB`.`table` " on a confluence page it get's reformatted and my ` chars are used as indicating code blocks, I would very much prefer if Confluence would just paste my text as is without formatting.

(Why oh why do I find that I spend more and more time trying to workaround atlassians features, instead of actually being productive :( )
